Training

January 28, 2009
Here goes my Thailand/Fairtex training log. After a 30hr travel excursion, we made it to the Bangplee camp that has been here in Bangkok for over 36 years now. The camp it self is nice. They kept as much of the trees and bushes as they could while building the camp. They have 3 leopards in a huge cage, 3 little monkey things that love to show off by flipping around and doing gymnastics. The same moves you see in the olympics are the same moves these little monkeys do, its crazy. There is also a big dog in a good size cage thats protected by 2 geese. 1 of the geese decided to take after me when I approached the dog so that made it easy to decide that leaving the dog alone was a good idea. For actual training, it started at 8am with a 10min eliptical run which I decided to do because I could not figure out how to start the treadmill. Once my buddy Oscar instructed me on the proper treadmill starting instructions, i did a 20 min run followed by a 45min pad workout. The pad training was mostly elbows and round kicks. My pad holder\'s name is Dum. I decided not to explain what it means in the US. The training was not that hard but more techniqual. Which is a good thing as this training trip is not to work out crazy but to have fun and enjoy the actual experience. Once the pad training was done, all the students of the camp met at the food court area for some Thai style grub. We had rice and chicken which is a pretty frequent dish around this country. After eating, my wife and I had a full 1 hr massage at the hotel which ended up costing me a total of 22 US dollars for both of us. Not too bad huh? Yes, thats with the tip too. Afternoon training was a 30min run which I personally like to do. I love to run. You can warm up how ever you like, the camp is pretty relaxed with how hard and how many rounds you want to do but the rounds are 4 minutes. I found that in comparision to how I hit mitts, the pad training that Ive been doing here is pretty easy. Part of it is because of the language barrier on both parts. My lack of speaking Thai but my trainer Dum, speaks enough english to communicate the proper technique though. Then again, im not complaining as Id preffer to learn a bit more this trip and not work my butt of until I have a fight set. It feels good being the student again. So after my run, I had training filmed for the Fiartex website but Im not too sure when the footage will be posted. With Dum, we went over a few of his personal favorite combos which were mostly kicks and elbows. There were a few things that I did not think of while training with Dum that were more Muay Thai geared which is expected. My own styke is more of a Dutch style that includeds the hands a bit more then the kicks which transfers over to MMA a bit easier. In my own opinion. Some of the combos we worked were right low kick followed by a push off Dums chest to keep him of balance then followed by another kick but from the left side to a right hand followed by 2 more low kicks. Dum had me using a lot of faints which was more my style. Jab Jab then fake a jab while throwing a left insdie kick to another left kick but to the head. All in all, its great to just be in the heart of Thailand with so much history. The camp has 4 rings set up so it makes 1 big square. another smaller ring off to the side with a full rack oif bags that I stay away from. With my style of fighting where I use my opponents moves aginst him, the bag the just sits there and does nothing in my mind, i need something to feed off of, a strike to counter, a rythm to read and mistake to happen in order to attack. This will be it for the night as its 10 minutes to 9pm here, it\'s 650am in Colorado so im a lil beat. Ill follow up with more. Thanks,
